“Five Anatomical Sketches”

A recording of my piano piece Five Anatomical Sketches is now online at jonathanwoolgar.com/listen, played by its dedicatee Philip Sharp. Here is the programme note:

These five sketches are austere, the bone and sinew of my compositional thinking. That is not to say they are cold or clinical; indeed, they are to be played with utmost expressivity and cantabile. Each movement has a single melodic line running through it, with other voices or chords occasionally running alongside or splitting off from this core. I hope that the sketches have a brutal poetry about them, the relative simplicity allowing access to something pure and concentrated.

You can also listen to other recordings on this site, including my Scherzetto for String Quartet and Star Songs. More coming soon.
