These five sketches are austere, the bone and sinew of my compositional thinking. That is not to say they are cold or clinical; indeed, they are to be played with utmost expressivity and cantabile. Each movement has a single melodic line running through it, with other voices or chords occasionally running alongside or splitting off from this core. I hope that the sketches have a brutal poetry about them, the relative simplicity allowing access to something pure and concentrated.
